James: wisdom encapsulated – to pass around

Dave Smith - Senior Pastor of Rayleigh Vineyard

Dave Smith - Senior Pastor of Rayleigh Vineyard

Sunday Morning Talks at the Vineyard. Do you ever ask yourself the question “what on earth does the Bible have to say to us today?”? How can a 2,000 year old text be relevant to my life here and now? As you delve deeper into the Bible, one of the most striking things is how much the people who lived then are like the people who live now. When God inspired the Bible to be written down all those years ago he knew that the problems and issues the folk faced in that era are common to all ages.

We are currently looking at the book written by James. Actually its a letter (or epistle) that he wrote. Well, to be honest its more of a collection of wise sayings or proverbs that James (who was the younger brother of Jesus) wrote down as a permanent record so people could pass it around and all get the benefit of the wisdom encapsulated there.

James looks at issues like, what you do, how you act, is a direct consequence of what you believe. If you believe God is a great person and worth getting to know then your life will reflect that fact and you will be naturally kinder, more generous, careful not to offend, looking out for other less fortunate folk who live around you. Which is exactly what Jesus did when he was around.

You can hear some of the talks presented on Sundays on our Podcast Page.

Teddy Bear’s (slightly damp) Picnic

100712_misioVineyard Kids went down to the woods last week for a big surprise. Hockley Woods to be exact enjoying a fun day out and a very special picnic with teddy bears for company. Wednesday 27 May saw us (slightly damply) having fun with games, prizes, free kids lunch, treats etc all with a teddy bear theme. There were prizes for the cutest teddy bear, the most loved (and well worn) teddy bear and the best non-teddy bear (which was won by a very cute monkey!). For more pics follow this link.
